Lawton became a "sleep only" paci user by around 15 months, and willingly gave his paci to some newborn twins when he was about two years and two months. However, meet Miss Priss - aka Paci-aholic. She has not been as willing to give it up when she got out of her crib, and well, Mommy hasn't been as strict about enforcing it, either. (She is 20 months now)
Also meet Miss-Chiclet-Overbite-but-I'm-still-the-cutest-thing-ever-to-Momma. Oh, and the fear that if she loves her paci this much now, HOW much MORE will she love it later? Can you tell this has been a major deal around the house by now?!?!
Well, on Friday morning, for some strange-out-of-my-mind-experience, I thought it was time to get rid of the paci - COLD TURKEY. I'm crazy. That day it went great, and at nap time she only cried for a few minutes and then silence.
I'm a genius.
Only when I got her up from nap, she had somehow found the one paci out of her fifteen that I had apparently (not) confiscated. Shoot.
That night, though, we stuck to our guns and, poor baby, cried for about forty minutes. Chad would have given her a paci three minutes in, but he doesn't even know where I hid them. I'm smart like that. Oh, and Chad, I publicly apologize for the agony I've put you through this weekend. But know I've been through the same agony. Do you still love me? :)
Saturday night - cried for fifteen minutes. Sunday night - didn't cry at all. Sunday from 12:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. - wailed. Nap times Sunday and Monday - minimal.
Has she been a little on edge, like she just came off of crack? Yes. Have Chad and I been a little on edge like we need to go on crack? Yes. (totally a joke, Mom. Calm down.)
Even Lawton knows not to mention the sacred word (p - a - c - i) for fear of sending her on a search.
She has been LOUD - singing and talking ALL the time instead of occasionally, and she has been exceptionally oral . . . note the pictures below.
This was on the first day - she was desperately seeking for a paci and went to her drawer where the back ups were, only to find they were gone. She came out with this, and I'm not even sure why I hung on to it in the first place, but she sure was happy!! This confirms that she is addicted. BAD.
Saturday night we went to Cracker Barrel and this is how she decided to self soothe. Pitiful, eh?Do I feel SO PROUD that we won't have to wean her of it later? Yes!
Do I still wish that she still had it for my sanity? Yes! (but I feel as though we can't cave now)
Oh, and just add in . . . I'm not judging anyone for paci use . . . actually I might be jealous and kicking myself for not allowing her to still have it . . .

Way to stick to your guns, but I do feel really sorry for all of you! Like Lawton, Andrew was a breeze to get off the paci. He would only take one specific paci; it broke around his second birthday, and that was the end of that. Unfortunately, Emily has always refused plastic products (she would NOT drink from a bottle or take a paci). She is five and still sucks her thumb like crazy. Unfortunately, I can't take that away!
Laura Beth,
I can identify with you. Abbie, who turns 2 this week, is totally attached to her passy and I have no idea how we are going to get rid of it. I let Sophie keep hers for bedtime/naptime until she was 3 but I really want to get rid of Abbie's sometime soon. It's not fun so I know the trauma you've had to go through.
Paula
that picture of her with the paci case in her mouth is HILARIOUS. good for you! i hate having to do stuff like that.
Too cute. Faith was addicted to her paci also. We didn't take it away till she was 2 1/2 years and we only did that because we went to Memphis to see Kevin's mom and I forgot to pack them. Fortunately, Mrs. Walton likes to stay up late so she stayed up with Faith till 2 in the morning the first night and after that she was fine and she didn't even ask for her paci's when we got home. John Derrick wouldn't take a paci or a thumb.
I can identify with the paci problems! Brooks was VERY addicted. He liked to hold one and suck one and then switch them out.... it was so funny to watch him do this in his sleep. We made him give them up at 2 1/2 by having a paci party. We invited all his friends over and celebrated the fact that he was a big boy and then watched as a bunch of balloons carried about 8 pacis into the sky. He had a few rough nights, but it wasn't too bad. We have pushed the paci on Braden too. We even carried them to the hospital when he was born because we had heard that they were not allowed to give them one. I agree with you. I think pacis are great for self-soothing and helps reduce SIDS. I hope that things get better (quieter) around your house very soon!
You are hilarious. I love the comment about going on crack and saying that it's a joke. ;) Way to go. Hopefully we won't have the same problem with Jacob and his paci, but most likely, we will. :)
you're cracking me up! good for you for being consistent. i always want to cave just so i can sleep! we're having major sleep all night issues with claire right now & she will cry for hours!!
We just went cold turkey with Jackson. I kind of didn't want him to give it up because he is the last baby. I LOVED the paci, but it was definitely time for it to go. I don't know why, but after a week of no paci, we went cold turkey on the diapers. Surprisingly he has done awesome with the potty training.
The picture of her sucking the paci holder is priceless. That girl needed her fix. I feel that way about chocolate.
