Well, I'm SURE all of you blog readers have seen and love the Chevy Chase Vacation movies from the 80's, right? I mean, I LOVED them (I think I have probably only seen the edited versions), including
National Lampoon's Vacation and
National Lampoon's European Vacation. They make me chuckle just thinking about certain scenes . . . like when everything goes SO wrong and you just laugh at Clark Griswold and all his misfortunes. Yet, all the while he makes his family endure even more tragedies as they must finish their beloved vacations. So, I was recounting our first vacation as a married couple (which was an absolute Lampoon's vacation) and thought I would share and hopefully give all of you, my favorite bloggers, a good chuckle at our expense. (We can now laugh, too, so don't worry about us.)
For some reason, after Chad and I had only been married for 6 or so months, we thought we could do a tour of New England on a mere budget of $500 or so. I'm not exaggerating. (Give us a break, we had just completed our first years of teaching. We weren't exactly rolling in dough.) We knew it would be tight, but we could do it! We were invincible newlyweds! We had our course planned out, campsites reserved, and thankfully gas wasn't astronomical like it is these days. We had just spent the last summer (2000) as an engaged couple working at
Camp Shiloh in New York state, and we wanted to go back and visit our friends and campers, so we thought, why not just make a vacation out of it?
We packed my gold Honda Accord (Goldie, sniff, sniff) to the brim with our tent, camping accessories, my Longaberger (wedding present) picnic basket, a spiral notebook full of our plans and a newly purchased U.S. atlas to navigate our way to New England and back. I had meticulously packed and fit everything we would need just so into the car. From very early on in our relationship, it was clear that I am the spatial one (I can load a dishwasher to make every last dish fit or organize a drawer or closet like no other. I can tell if that last bit of casserole will fit in a Tupperware dish that looks too small, but really isn't. It's a gift. Don't hate me.) Chad on the other hand, isn't so spatial (even though guys usually have this knack), so I'm the one who packs our suitcases and the car usually.
Anyways, we packed and we were off. Our plan was to drive through the tri-cities of Tennessee, up through Virginia, and camp in a State Park in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania the first night. We enjoyed a relatively uneventful drive the first day, eating a picnic lunch somewhere in Virginia and arriving to the campground before nightfall. We cooked our dinner on our Coleman stove once we got there and pretty much crashed soon after we finished dinner.
The next morning, we started packing up all our gear. If you've ever gone camping, you know it takes a lot stuff and you just kind of have it all out so that you can get to it. So, we were packing up and it starts
raining. Chad, in the quest to keep all of our stuff from getting soaked, then steaming and stinking up the car when the sun would inevitably come out, he quickly threw and crammed everything in the car. I arrived back from the bathhouse and everything was packed, and I knew it was a hot mess in the trunk and in the back seat. Now, I realize I was probably a
little irrational, but I think I started crying. I mean, I had spent two days knowing how everything would fit and how we could easily access everything needed. I tried to get over it quickly, though, because it was downright RAINING at this point. Sigh.
We had planned to go to
Gettysburg since we were there, so we spent the morning wandering around the fields where many men had given their lives and saw where Abraham Lincoln gave the famous Gettysburg Address. I'm not a huge history fan, but it was interesting, at least the parts I can remember. But c'mon. It was RAINING. Oh, and it was FREE.
However, there was a schedule to keep, so we hopped in the car and headed to Hershey, PA. Yep, I was excited about this stop. Hershey - as in CHOCOLATE! If you know me at all, you know I will never pass up an opportunity for chocolate. (Just this morning I helped host a shower and after looking at the menu, there was *gasp* no CHOCOLATE! So of course I volunteered to bring the chocolate to represent that part of the food pyramid.) We arrived at Hershey and headed to
Hershey's Chocolate World. Of course, I would have loved to go to visit
Hershey Park, but that would have cost us some money. So we went to Hershey's Chocolate World, took the FREE tour, and even got a FREE mini Hershey Bar at the end. We decided that we needed some cheap souvenir to celebrate this
fabulous stop in our journey, so we landed upon four cheap, plastic cups which are still in our cabinet today. (One Mr. Goodbar, one Reese's, one Hershey's Chocolate Bar, and one Kit Kat cup . . . just in case you were wondering.) I think we ate another picnic lunch and then headed on our way to
The Big Apple.
We had spent a few weekends in New York City while we worked at Camp Shiloh the summer before. We wanted to do a few things that we hadn't done before, including
splurging and taking the
NBC Studio Tour- because, if you didn't know this, I am a huge
Today Show fan. Alas, my Today Show watching days are mostly over, because
Word World or
Clifford the Big Red Dog are on instead. But I digress. So, we headed to Manhattan, because we had graciously been allowed to stay at Manhattan Church of Christ on a mattress in a classroom for two nights. The church allows Shiloh workers to stay there on the weekends, and so they allowed us to stay, too, because we were "poor newlyweds". The minister lives on the top floor, (it
is on the Upper East Side of Manhattan) and buzzed us in when we needed to enter. So, we managed to find a parking spot almost right in front of the church, amazingly, and crashed in a classroom, beat from the exciting day of traveling, Gettysburg and Hershey.
The next morning, we showered in the tiny showers outside the baptistry, and headed out to splurge and eagerly go get the bagels we had been drooling over for the past year at
H & H Bagel several blocks over from the church. We walked to get something out of our car, and I thought to myself, Chad left the car unlocked overnight! And then we sickeningly realized at the same time,
our car had been broken into. Ugh.
Stay tuned to the next edition of Our Chevy Chase Vacation soon! :)
