On the way to pick up Lawton from pre-school the other day, I passed a local elementary school with a sign in the front lawn. The sign? For KICKBALL league sign-ups.
Seriously?
I started laughing out loud. I mean, there's soccer, basketball, football, baseball, softball, youth hockey, flag football, and all other sports leagues for youth that I'm sure I'm not aware of. But kickball? A league for KICKBALL? Like all us "soccer moms" don't have enough shuttling around to do. (Even though I'm not a "soccer mom" at the moment. I was last fall, though. And that's why I'm not this spring. ha!)
And then I started thinking back to my youth when it was a terrific school day if we were able to play kickball in P.E. (And even better in 5th and 6th grade when we were able to play SWEETHEART kickball and *gasp* hold hands with hopefully the cool guy in class. . .
But I digress. . . I can still remember the "heavy kickers" in elementary school. I mean, when Joshua Pride or Daniel Blair were up, every one backed WAAAAY up, because man, they could kick it out of the "park"! And then in 5th and 6th grade, after I had switched schools, Michael Agee and John Butler were the ball busters. And guess what? They all, of course, were the "cool guys". Hmmm. . .
So after pondering this for a while (I think about random stuff - a lot.) , I asked Chad if he remembered the kickball kings growing up. Of course, he rattled off a few names, including himself. :)
So my synopsis? If you are/were a superior kickball player, you are/were automatically cool. So, I bet the kickball league coordinator's phone has been ringing off the hook . . . because I have a feeling that things don't change much in elementary school P.E., even twenty plus years later.
And to top it all off, the next day I was able to catch the legendary classic Cosby show - the one with Stevie Wonder. "Jammin' on the one" "I don't know what to say" "laaaaa" etc. I was enjoying reliving yet another moment of my youth. (If you want to relive the moment and be a loser like me and waste 2:49 minutes, you can click HERE, because you can find anything on youtube! ha!
Please don't make me feel like a total loser . . . you guys remember the Kickball Kings at your school and certain Cosby Show episodes, right?! Don't leave me hangin . . . :)

I was one of the few girls that wanted to play kickball in my grade. All the other girls just wanted to watch and giggle at the cute/popular boys! Not me! I was getting dirty and sweaty out on the field with the rest of 'em. AND I loved the Cosby Show...
j j j jammin on the one, jammin on the one! love that episode. kickball was the bomb except for that time it hit me in the ear and caused my newly pierced earring to fall through my ear lobe & split it in half! not pretty!
Oi. Parabéns pelo seu excelente blog. Gostaria de lhe convidar para visitar meu blog e conhecer um pouco sobre o Brasil. Abração
Your post is too funny...and yes I can identify with the kickball days. We all loved Cosby show in our home growing up too. =)
By the way, thank you for letting us borrow the casserole dishes. They looked great for our brunch!

My kickball memory: I FINALLY kicked the ball (after always "striking out"), and as I was running to first, Jon Maynard threw the ball at my feet, and I ate dirt--literally!! It was embarassing, awful, awful, awful. So....I'm not so much a kickball fan, and (obviously) I've never been even remotely athletic!
Mark DeLoach and Mac McCracken - and I love Cosby too. They don't make 'em like that anymore. I saw that same kickball league sign too and was amazed. Sounds like fun though!
