It was a great moment when they announced that they would split the summer/winter Olympics to alternate every two years. I get caught up in the stories, the backgrounds, sacrifices and hardships of all the athletes. Oh, and the music, the music! The pride that some countries sometimes have for their sole athlete. . . wow. I get all caught up in the races and quit breathing I'm so into it. Oh yeah. . . and if you haven't read this blog for any amount of time, then you might not know that I cry when people win things. I cry more for these happy moments than sad moments - and I don't know why. (like Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune, people) So, with all the winning that is about to take place, I have a new box of Kleenex ready for the couch. :)
I was lucky enough to attend the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. I really wanted to go, but way back then the process for acquiring tickets was somewhat complex compared to what I can only assume it is like today. Mom told me that if I could figure out the ticket request system and actually get us tickets, we would go. It was on.
I vividly remember sitting at the kitchen table on the DAY the form had to be postmarked trying to figure out the schedule. For each ticket that you wanted, you had to choose your first four choices. Those choices couldn't conflict with any other events/time frames because it was a total lottery. My scheduling/problem solving/detail oriented ways were on hyper alert. After laboriously figuring out a proposed schedule and our top choices, then filling out the pages and pages of bubbles, (seriously) we raced to the post office to make sure it was postmarked that day. So fun! :) I might blog about some of my memories over the next two weeks so stay tuned!
We have big plans to stay home tomorrow night, order a pizza and watch the opening ceremonies. :) For several months I have been planning on giving my already geography infatuated boy THIS:

I meant to have already gotten a large world map to hang on our wall . . . hmmm. I hope Wal-Mart has one tomorrow!
And here is another book that I will give him tomorrow: :)

And this book is the next one on my list to get . . . it just came out in January!! So cool!

So . . . because I want to share my LOVE of the Olympics with you on this weekend filled with LOVE, I am going to give away either the Flag Sticker Book OR The Story of the Olympics.
If your kiddo is too little, that's okay. The Olympics will come around again in two years, and four, and six. . .so enter anyways! Or enter to win for your niece or nephew! Leave me a comment telling me your favorite winter Olympic sport! The winner will be announced Monday and I will immediately send it out for your Olympic viewing enjoyment.
Go USA!!!

Sorry I deleted my first comment. There was a typo.
These books sound wonderful! I hope you enjoy the next two weeks. It sounds like you are ready!
Adam wanted to go to the Atlanta Olympics, but he didn't get to go because we got married during them (the bombing happened the night of our wedding). I'll have to ask him if marrying me was worth missing it. He better say yes! :)
My favorite sport is speed skating. It is so exciting and fast paced!! The flag sticker book would be my choice. How much is the lift the flap book?
I don't know if I have a favorite sport. I love them all. The figure skating, half pipe, down hill skiing, bobsledding. They are all so much fun to watch.
Oh, I love the music, too...and the stories! My favorite is anything on ice...figure skating, speed skating, even curling :)
bobsledding is my favorite!
My daughter would LOVE the Flag sticker book. She has a passion when it comes to learning about the world. She knows the continents and is working hard to learn about different Countries. She has just been introduced to a few Flags.
Thanks for the wonderful giveaway!

I like the ice skating in the winter Olympics. When the summer Olympics are around, I watch every minute of gymnastics, swimming, diving, track, marathon. Its all great! I was at the 1996 Olympics too!
I think my son and I would enjoy doing the flag book together.
Alice
i'm much more of a summer olympics fan, but i do enjoy the figure skating...much to my hubby's dismay!
I've never heard of someone so interested in the olympics. It's a great thing to get into though.
I love to watch the figure skating! love the books you recommended, hope to win one!
Figure skating and ice dancing are my faves. However, I am looking forward to watching Louie Vito, too. He was one of my faves of Dancing with the stars!
so fun! i too have been counting down the days. love the downhill skiing and all ice skating events!
I like the speed skating too, and actually last time around I caught some kehrling (I can't remember exactly how to spell it) and it was fascinating! I'm looking forward to the opening ceremonies tonight too.
We saw some figure skating recently, and my son said, "Wow, I wish I could skate like that." He's also been really into geography lately, so I think he will enjoy learning about the olympics. And I'm sure he would love the sticker book! Hockey is my favorite.
My favorite sport is ice skating. Both books look nice. It would be hard to choose...
I love the figure skating...the singles more than the couples. I, too, was at the 1996 Olympics. It was a great experience...right up to the part when the town went nuts after the bombing. I was 16 and pretty scared. I like the view from my couch these days.
Curling. It's just so off the wall.
Couples figure skating has always been my favorite!!! :)
My favorite Olympic sport is the figure skating. I love gymnastics in the summer olympics. The flag sticker book is super!

I guess my fav is the skiing.
I didn't go to the 1996 Olympics but I saw the when it was running thru GA.
Have you seen the P&G commerical that shows the little kids getting ready to compete in Olympic sports and then says something like "To Their Moms they'll always be kids"? Cry every time.
My husband and I rarely watch television these days, but have been completely sucked in by the Olympics. I really liked watching the mogul skiing. I don't know how they do it! Yet, they make it look so easy.
My boys would love either book, but that flag book does look most appealing. They love to read and I love to throw in a bit of "edutainment" when I can. :)
Great giveaway idea!
